The Hobbyzone Champ is the most popular choice for a first rc airplane and is suitable for a total beginner. It is a stable, predictable, and durable trainer. The 3ch controls are very simple, with THR, ELE and RUD. Takeoffs are easy with a touch of up elevator. Landings can be done totally dead stick or apply a touch of throttle. Parts are readily available. Ready to fly (RTF) models have absolutely everything in the box to get you started. Bind N Fly (BNF) models are available for those with their own higher level transmitter.

 

My setup on the Walkera Devo 10 transmitter with Deviation software provides full proportional control and silky smooth handling characteristics. I also programmed both the AIL & RUD sticks to control the RUD. The Champ can slow down to a fast walking pace and can be flown in a small park or large yard. I fly in a cul-de-sac quite easily.

 

Even with more flying experience pilots still find the Champ to be a fun and relaxing flyer.

 

The only change I have made is to replace the wheels with Dubro Mini Lite 1.5" for smoother rolling takeoffs and landings.
